ROCHELLE — Some windy and cold weather didn’t deter a pretty large group of people from participating in the eighth annual Rochelle Turkey Trot event on Thanksgiving Day.
Approximately 175 friends and family members of all ages came out early Thursday morning for the 5K walk/run to enjoy some fellowship and exercise, while also helping raise money for the Rochelle Area Community Foundation’s Health and Wellness Fund.
“Yes, the wind was pretty cold, but we still had a strong turnout,” said event organizer Lauren Hintzsche after the starting gun sent entrants off. “There were a lot of walk-up registrations and our T-Shirt design was a popular item this year.”
Hintzsche said the event typically raises close to $2,000 each year for the earmarked RACF fund, which in turn helps provide grant money for non-profit agencies that provide health and wellness services and projects to the community.
“It still seems to be pretty popular, and as long as people keep wanting to come out for an early morning event on Thanksgiving, then we will keep running it,” Hintzsche said. “I think families enjoy getting some exercise prior to the big dinner and having a group activity that most everyone can do.”
