ROCHELLE — Earning First-Team All-Conference honors last season didn’t stop Rochelle junior Abby Lundquist from putting in more work for the Lady Hubs varsity basketball team this season.
Lundquist led the Lady Hubs in scoring this winter, averaging 17.9 points per game and improving on her scoring average by nearly three points from her sophomore campaign. Lundquist surpassed 1,000 career points while moving into fourth on Rochelle’s all-time scoring list.
And for the second straight season, Lundquist received First-Team All-Conference recognition by the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference. Senior Jacie Wyatt earned an All-Conference Honorable Mention after leading the Lady Hubs in both rebounds per game (5.8) and blocks per game (0.8).
“It definitely motivates me to work harder going into next season,” Lundquist said. “I had more confidence in myself than I did last year, and I feel like I’m becoming more confident as I gain more experience.”
Rochelle finished 12-17 this season, improving on its win total by one game from the 2016-17 school year. Lundquist frequently led the Lady Hubs in scoring, notching big performances including a game-high 26 points at Geneseo, 24 points against United Township and a season-best 28 points on Sterling during Dixon’s KSB Holiday Classic.
As Lundquist prepares for her senior season, she said she’s looking to improve her game in many areas including finishing around the basket. She’ll also be taking on a leadership role next year, with 10 seniors departing this year’s varsity squad.
“I learned so much from them,” Lundquist said. “They were such a good group of girls and they really made this year fun. I learned a lot about teamwork and how to be a family. I want to lead by example next year because every senior did that this year. I want to start talking more.”
