HARLINGEN, Tex. — Martha Jane Pumfrey, 83, formerly of Ashton, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2022 at Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. Martha was born in Dixon to George and Ruby E. (Hicks) Jacobs on March 2, 1938. On May 2, 1959, she married Richard “Dick” Eugene Pumfrey in Harmon, Illinois.
As well as being a homemaker Martha was a school bus driver for Franklin Center schools and cleaned homes prior to her retirement. She and Dick enjoyed camping, horseback riding and dancing. They loved doing the polka and could be found out dancing most Saturday nights. Martha had a great love for the Lord. She attended and led many bible studies. She was also blessed with the gift of visitation. She would regularly make the rounds to visit friends and family who were shut in or sick. One of Martha’s favorite things to do was to play cards or games. Her grandkids and great grandkids never had to ask twice.
Martha is survived by her three children: Michele (Juan) Vela of San Isidro, Texas, Danelle (Stephen) Merrell of Polo, and Darrin (Tamara) Pumfrey of Franklin Grove; sister, Marjorie (David) Kelso of Stuart, Florida; two grandsons: Matthew Hudson and Brandon Hudson; two great-grandsons, Landin Hudson and Bryce Hudson; one brother-in-law, Leon Boehle of Dixon; four sisters-in-law: Grayce Hartman of Woodberry, Minnesota, Karen (Howard) Fitzgerald of Lancaster, Kentucky, Jean Pumfrey of Sycamore and Janice (Don) Farley of Peoria, Arizona.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dick, on Oct. 19, 2009, sister, Maxine Boehle on July 9, 2006, and her granddaughter, Miranda Ann Pumfrey on March 17, 2021.
The visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 31, 2022, at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 1, at New Hope Fellowship Church, 1501 10th Ave., Rochelle with Pastor Dan Sergeant officiating. Burial will follow the service at Ashton Cemetery in Ashton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Martha’s memory to New Hope Fellowship Church.
