ROCHELLE — Matus Mayo Armstrong Jr., 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 in his home. Matus was born on Jan. 6, 1929 in Swan Quarter, N.C., to Matus and Margaret (Dunbar) Armstrong.
He served with the United States Army during the Korean War. Matus was a tree trimmer for 44 years. He married Betty Jane Duncan on Oct. 5, 1957 in Silvis Heights, Ill.
Matus is survived by his wife, Betty, of 60 years; four sons, Thomas Armstrong of Rochelle, Tim (Kara) Armstrong of Geneva, Terry (Ruth) Armstrong of St. Charles, and Mark (Larea) Armstrong of Aurora; two sisters, Doris Adderholdt of Culpepper, Va., and Margaret (Alan) Cuthrell of Hampton, Va.; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 25 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. Sixth St., Rochelle. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 26 at First General Baptist Church, 500 S. 12th St., Rochelle, with Pastor Angelo Bonacquisti officiating. Cremation care is provided by the Unger-Horner Funeral Home.
