Under the direction of Rochelle Township High School Hall of Famer Sarah Meadows, the Geneva Vikings girls basketball team took down Edwardsville this weekend by a score of 41-40 in the IHSA Class 4A State Finals to win the first state championship in program history.
Geneva (29-4) defeated Fremd in the semifinals by a score of 34-33 to advance to the state finals, while Edwardsville (32-1) took down Montini 37-35 to claim its spot in the title match. The championship is the first in Meadows' tenure as head coach of the Vikings.
Meadows took over varsity coaching duties in 2011 for Gina Nolan after heading the sophomore team for seven years and the freshman team for one year. The Lady Hub Hall of Famer was a standout basketball player at Rochelle, and she has led Geneva to six regional titles, three sectional titles and two super-sectional titles since beginning her varsity coaching tenure with the Vikings. The girls also took fourth in the state tournament during the 2013-14 season.
