Memorial Day celebrations set

Posted

Memorial Day services will be held in Rochelle, as well as surrounding communities, on Monday.
Rochelle
The Rochelle Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. in front of Rochelle City hall on Monday.
The route this year will begin at Sixth Street and Fifth Avenue, turning right onto Lincoln Highway, right on Lincoln Avenue, right on Ninth Street, left on Eighth Avenue and end at the Veterans War Memorial at Lawnridge Cemetery.
The ceremony will begin once the parade reaches the cemetery at approximately 11 a.m.  In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the VFW post. In past years, hundreds of American flags would be placed on the veteran’s graves. But due to the rain, only 20 or so flags will be placed this year, in case they need to be taken down quickly to prevent them from being damaged.
Steward
A parade of Flags and Flowers will be led by Boy Scout Troop 64 starting in front of the United Methodist Church, pausing at the memorial in front of the elementary school. The parade will proceed to the Steward Cemetery where a short program will be held. The program will begin at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, after church.

Woodlawn Cemetery
Woodlawn Cemetery will be hold its Memorial Day service on May 27 beginning at 10 a.m. In the case of inclement weather the program will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 124 South St. Creston. This year the program will feature WWII Veteran Yngve (Morry) Johnson and his son, Kevin, telling his service story. Yngve is possibly the last WWII veteran in the Creston area. The program will also include a full roll call, reading of Flanders field, singing by Debbie Katzman and the playing of “Taps” by Sam Tracy. Everyone is welcome to attend, and it is recommended to bring lawn chairs.
White Rock Cemetery
White Rock Cemetery will be holding its Memorial Day services at 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 27, at Elim Reformed Church, 140 S. Church Road, Kings. The speaker this year will be Lt. Col. Stacy Seaworth, who is a native to the Kings area and recently retired from 23 years of active duty in the U.S. Army. There will also be special music provided by retired U.S. Army Chaplin Nick Bell, who is also from the area. White Rock history will be provided by Dawn Somers.
Following service in the church, everyone will proceed to the cemetery to lay flowers on the Veterans’ graves.
Roll Call honoring the Veterans who have died in action as well as those who have served and now have died will be read by Dennis Alderks. “Taps” will be played in their honor. Refreshments will be served at the church.
Roberts Armory
Roberts Armory WWII Museum will be open to the public on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, from 1 to 4 p.m.  The Higgins Boat will be open for viewing, weather permitting. To get to the museum follow the signs on the Army Truck at Illinois Route 251 and Intermodal Drive for approximately three miles. There will be many World War II artifacts on display including tanks, trucks, cannons and Rochelle News-Leader newspapers from 1945 presenting photos of Rochelle residents who served during World War II. Vehicles from the museum will also be in the Memorial Day parade in Rochelle.
Admission to the museum is free.
