Museum to host school bell dedication event Dec. 11

The Flagg Township Museum will host a dedication event for the Flagg Center School Bell on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m.

ROCHELLE – Come to the dedication and ringing of the Flagg Center School Bell. A gift to the museum in 1972 from Mr. and Mrs. John Barry Hayes brought the school bell to the museum, but it wasn’t until Flagg Township provided funding for a way to display the school bell that the bell was put on view properly. For several years it was stored in one of the jail cells in the museum and then it was moved to the second floor in the school exhibit area but was displayed on its side, not a proper way at all. Today the Flagg Center School Bell has a permanent home that is to be dedicated and the bell to be rung on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m.

Plans were initially developed by local artist Fran Volz in collaboration with former Museum Director Sarah Koepke. The plan was revised and construction of the current structure began in the fall by Volz. A builder talk by Volz will be part of the dedication with discussion about the planning and building of the current structure, a replica of a cupola. Light refreshments will also be available.

The mission of the Flagg Township Historical Society and Museum is to stimulate interest in Flagg Township history through education, research, collection and preservation of information for the benefit of the public of today and in the future.
