ASHTON — Neil Douglas Henert, 73, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford. Neil was born July 25, 1945 in Rochelle, the son of Donald and Lois (Wetzel) Henert. He married Connie Kae Carter on Feb. 27, 1965 in Ashton. 

Neil was a graduate of Rockford Barber College. He worked as a warehouse manager for Crest Foods for over 45 years, retiring in December 2014. He was a village trustee and vice president for the Village of Ashton for many years. Neil was a member of the Ashton United Methodist Church and served as a trustee on the church board. He was a member of the Horicon Masonic Lodge #244. His hobbies included horseback riding, reading, crossword puzzles, and rooting for the Chicago Bears. He most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. 

Neil is survived by his wife, Connie; three children, Tim (Kelly) Henert of Ashton, Shaine (Angie) Henert of Loves Park, and Chet (Marni) Henert of Byron; nine grandchildren, Mellisa (Seth) McMillan, Adam (Kelley) Herwig, Mallory Henert, Justin Henert, Grace Henert, Justus Henert, Kennedy Henert, Delaney Henert, and Emery Henert; two great-grandchildren, Ella McMillan and Andrew McMillan;  brother, Larry (Jan) Henert of Davis Junction; sister, JoEllen Neubauer of Sterling; sister-in-law, Bettie (Harold) Helm; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

In addition to his parents, Neil is preceded in death by his brother, Kim Donald Henert.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Ashton United Methodist Church, 906 Richardson Ave., in Ashton. A masonic service will conclude the visitation at 7 p.m. at the church. 

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Ashton United Methodist Church with Pastor Satya Sudhaker officiating. Interment will follow in Ashton Cemetery. Contributions in Neil’s memory may be directed to Ashton United Methodist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
