ROCHELLE — Nicholas C. Agnos, 87, passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018 in Rochelle. 
Nick was born on Oct. 20, 1930 to Constantinos (Gus) and Frances (Petropoulos) Anagnostopoulos in Melrose Park.  He graduated from McKinley High School, Chicago in 1949 which is the same high school that Walt Disney and Benny Goodman attended. Nick graduated from Ray Vogue Art School in Chicago.
Nick was inducted into the United States Marines on Oct. 31, 1951 during the Korean Conflict and medically discharged on March 27, 1953.  He was fortunate to play football, basketball and baseball for the Marines.
Nick owned a restaurant and bar, Georgian, on Orleans Street in Chicago.  He later moved to Rochelle in 1969 and went into business with Paul Stavrakas at the Beacon Restaurant, managed Rochelle Country Club, owned the Hub Lounge and Three Kings Restaurant.  His last working years were at Kishwaukee College in maintenance.
He married Connie Stangley on April 30, 1977 in Rochelle.  
Nick loved working with wood and made many sport plaques for friends as gifts. Nick was always a White Sox fan, but he was signed into the Chicago Cubs organization in 1951 and then signed in with the Yankees in 1955.  
In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by his son, Michael, in 1990, his in-laws, Oscar (1991) and Dorothy (Skinner) Stangley (2001), his sister-in-law, Carole Lynn Rice in 2012, sister-in-law Carol Agnos, and just recently his brother, John Agnos in 2018.
Nick is survived by his wife, Connie, of Rochelle; his sons, Peter N. Agnos of Rochelle and Gregory N. Agnos of Chandler, Ariz.; sister, Polly Polimus of St. Charles; nephews, Dennis Agnos of Elmhurst, Mark (Kristina) Polimus of Gary, Ind.; nieces, Loretta Agnos of Elmhurst, Amelia Nychis of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Frances (Davis) de’Treville of St. Charles; brother-in-law, George (Pam) Stangley of Rochelle; sister-in-law, Cheri (Jerry) Divine of Frisco, Colo.; many great nephews and nieces and bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There are some things most people don’t know about Nick. He played baseball against Mickey Mantle and Moose Skowran in Joplin, Missouri, and struck out Willie Mays and Del Crandle.
He played on the same Danville Cubs team with Bob Skinner and Bill Fischer and also with player turned famous actor Chuck Connors.
Nick danced with Marilyn Monroe at the Mission Beach Ballroom in 1952 and he dated Kim Novak.
He became lifelong friends with Nick and Pat Noble (recording artists) and band leader Ralph Marterie and family. He spent time with Blackhawk players Bill Hay and Eric Nesterenko and dated Bill’s sister.
Nick was introduced to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin at a nightclub in Wheeling in 1950.  
The memorial visitation will be from 1 – 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Salt 251, 531 S. 7th St., Rochelle.  The Celebration of Life service will follow at 3 p.m. at the restaurant. Cremation care is being handled by the Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle. 
Memorials may be made in Nick’s memory to the Rochelle Little League, Rochelle Annual Junior Golf Tournament or to the charity of your choice.
