DIXON – A man believed to be a former Dixon High School student is in custody after shots were fired on Wednesday morning at the school.

According to the City of Dixon Facebook page, “A Dixon Police Officer confronted an armed male subject at the Dixon High School at approximately 8 a.m. on May 16. Preliminary investigation shows the suspect shot at the police officer, the officer returned fire, and the suspect was injured. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. The suspect is in custody and is receiving medical treatment.

No students or staff were injured in the incident. The Dixon High School and all Dixon public schools have been put on lockdown. Dixon Police officials believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no further threat to the safety of students or staff. Multiple police agencies are on scene and Peoria Ave. will be closed for a period of time.

Lee County Sheriff’s Department officials said the school unification point will be at the baseball fields in Page Park and parents are to go there to pick-up their children.

The incident at Dixon High School also resulted in area schools being put on soft lock down for the sake of safety. According to the administration at AFC Schools, when they were made aware of the situation, the school went on soft lock down and they had been contacted by administration in Sterling that they were also on soft lockdown. Amboy School District is not on any lock down.
