OTTAWA — The Lady Hubs varsity basketball team held Ottawa standouts Angelique Cowan and Teegan Guerrero to just four points during the first half of Friday night’s conference game against the Lady Pirates. Rochelle led by five points after two quarters, but the purple and white couldn’t contain Ottawa’s top players in the second half.
Guerrero scored 10 consecutive points to begin the third quarter, and Cowan finished the game with a team-high 17 points as Rochelle lost by a final score of 50-45. Junior Abby Lundquist scored 16 points to lead the Lady Hubs, and senior Jacie Wyatt added 14 points including two 3-pointers for Rochelle (9-14).
“We had to stretch ourselves out defensively,” head coach Tony Rowan said. “Our reaction times were a little off and I know Cowan got to the basket in transition a few times which shouldn’t happen. Guerrero was hitting 3-pointers that we tried baiting her into taking, but she’s was shooting the ball well tonight.”
Playing without seniors Allysa Harding and Alex Ferrari due to injuries, the Lady Hubs pushed themselves to an 8-5 advantage after the first quarter before outscoring Ottawa 13-11 in the second quarter to lead 21-16 at halftime. Cowan had four points in the first half, while Guerrero was scoreless for the Lady Pirates.
“Our rotations had a purpose and I think we did a great job of finishing each possession off,” Rowan said. “I’m very proud of the kids for their performance in the first half, and I’m proud of how we played in the second half, but we just had some dead legs at the end of the game. We’re missing a couple of key girls.”
Sloan Gayan also stepped up in the second half for Ottawa, and Gayan ended the game with 14 points while helping the Lady Pirates take a 36-26 lead after the third quarter. Ottawa outscored Rochelle 20-5 in the quarter, and the purple and white wouldn’t find their offensive rhythm again until the end of the fourth quarter.
“I liked our shot selection and we were getting open looks but we just weren’t making them,” Rowan said. “We need to be able to knock down open looks, whether they’re semi-contested or non-contested. We have athletes on the floor… I liked what I saw with our face-guarding tonight, but we just don’t have a very deep bench right now.”
Rochelle will look to bounce back when the Lady Hubs face Morris on the road Tuesday.
