Parking changes near May School

ROCHELLE — Traffic congestion near May School will soon ease up following an ordinance approved by Rochelle City Council Monday evening.

The ordinance will prohibit parking on the north and south side of School Avenue from North Second Street going east for 150 feet during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days.

The move comes after requests from school bus drivers that have been experiencing difficulty when turning onto School Avenue when cars are parked near the intersection.

“To keep it as convenient as we can for everybody, this will be during the school days…this will remove cars parking alongside the roadway there,” Tim Isley, Superintendent of Streets explained. “That way the vehicles that are coming in and out can move over so the buses can make the turn. I think this will help out quite a bit with the congestion in that area.”

Although the ordinance passed pertains specifically to the May School area, Mayor Chet Olson asked if areas around Tilton and Central Schools might be evaluated for any parking issues.

Isley said the May School congestion is the only one so far brought to his attention, and only due to the congestion when buses are trying to navigate around parked cars on School Avenue.
