ROCHELLE — Flowers brighten everyone’s day, especially when it is unexpected and for no particular reason.
That’s just what staff at Colonial Flowers were doing Wednesday as part of “Petal it Forward” day. Created by the Society of American Florists, the idea stems in part because flowers make people happy. The annual event is scheduled on the second Wednesday in October.

“Flowers are such an emotional thing, it creates a good feeling,” Naomi Baldwin, owner of Colonial Flowers said. “It makes somebody’s day…and today it’s dreary out.”
Although the weather had been rainy and cloudy most of the day, the smiles on recipient’s faces were full of sunshine. Baldwin said her drivers enjoy delivering flowers, and seeing the sparkle in their eyes. The drivers even got hugs.
As of midday, Cristel Spartz, Samantha Ginger, and Lori Miller had already given over 60 flowers away.
Baldwin added she plans to participate in the event next year. After all, it’s nice to get flowers, but it’s really special to get them just because.
