LASALLE — Richard O. Carter, 84, of LaSalle, formerly of Rochelle, passed away June 18, 2017 after a long illness. He was born May 6, 1933 in Rochelle to Etsel and Sophie (Nicely) Carter.
Richard served as a Cpl. In the United States Marines, serving in the Korean War, active duty 1952-1954.
He married only once to his children’s mother but divorced when they were very young.
He was a lifelong antique dealer.
In 2000 he was left paralyzed and lived his last 17 years bedridden.
Before that his passion was buying and selling antiques.
With his sharp and dry sense of humor he could always make you laugh.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Craig and Shawn; his brother, Laverne (Bud) Carter; and five sisters, Juanita Brimhall, Rose Fisher, Lorraine Sherwood, MaryAnn Davis and Shirley Williams.
Richard is survived by his three children, Rick Carter, Melanie (Jim) Nantz and Sarah Carter, all of Rochelle; grandchildren, Corey Carter, Cassey (Frank) Arriaga, Carrie (John) Ramos, Maya Carter, Carrington Carter, Kaylin Carter, Corin (Frankie) Gonzales, Colin Carter, James (Candice) Jackson, and Nate (Daneille) Nantz; 11 great-grandchildren and another great-grandson due in July; one brother, Bill Carter of Indiana; two sisters, Sherry (Robert) Thompson and Arlene (Glenn) Davis, both of Rochelle; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no funeral, viewing or memorial per Richard’s request. He will be laid to rest next to his son, Craig, at Lawnridge Cemetery. Cremation rites were handled by Hurst Funeral Home in LaSalle.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to staff and nurses at the LaSalle Veterans Home.
