ROCHELLE — National Night Out started over 30 years ago as a way to promote police and community partnerships in an informal setting. The Rochelle Police Department is inviting the community to attend the event scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Atwood Park.
The event features music, food, and fun for the entire family including demonstrations, equipment displays and a unique guest — the OSF Life Flight Helicopter landing in the park.
Police Chief Eric Higby explained the purpose of the event is the same as many of the programs offered by the police department. Rochelle joins 16,000 communities across the nation in hosting the annual event that is held the first Tuesday of every August.
“Our bike patrol, citizen’s police academy, the trip to the boundary waters and others are all geared towards the community getting to know us,” Higby said. “When citizens are comfortable with their police officers, they are more likely to engage in conversations with us, which helps address problems in our city.”
