ROCHELLE — While the rain put an end to the fun prematurely, the Hubs varsity tennis team still got plenty of matches in at its annual home tournament this past Saturday at Rochelle Township High School.
Rochelle finished fifth overall in a tournament that included Dixon, Princeton, Mendota and Newman Central Catholic. Junior Noah Griffith placed second in No. 1 singles, defeating Princeton’s P.D. McKeown 6-2, 6-3 before taking down Mendota’s Cam Phalen in three sets (6-7(5-7), 6-3, (10-5)).
Freshman Ben Hickey represented the Hubs in No. 2 singles, placing fourth overall and beating Newman Central Catholic’s Brady Moran 6-3, 7-5 for his lone win of the day. Hickey fell to Princeton’s Nolan Frank 2-6, 2-6 before dropping a match to Mendota’s Blake Stamberger 4-6, 2-6.
Junior Kevin Zheng and sophomore Hector Garcia took fifth at No. 1 doubles, while senior Bryan Garcia and sophomore Chris Jones also finished fifth at No. 2 doubles. Zheng and Garcia’s closest match came in a three-set loss to Newman Central Catholic’s Jake Terveer and John Rhodes (6-4, 4-6, (5-10)).
Juniors Ozzy Fulgencio and Tyler Nalley took the court in No. 3 doubles, placing fifth overall through four matches. Rochelle totaled nine points as a whole, while Princeton took the tournament with 20 points and Dixon finished second with 19 points.
