ROCHELLE — The Rochelle City Council voted Monday evening to hire Jeff Fiegenschuh (pronounced faygen-shoo) as the city’s new city manager. Fiegenschuh will officially join the Rochelle team on Monday, Sept. 11.
Rochelle’s newest hire comes from the Village of Rantoul — population 12,815 — most recently and before that spent time in Princeton and Windsor Heights, Iowa. He has experience in downtown façade and streetscape projects as well as significant experience in management of a municipal utility.
“I was impressed by the mayor, city council and staff while interviewing for the position in Rochelle,” said Fiegenschuh. “I love the access to transportation, everything happening with the utilities, the overall progressive attitude and focus on the downtown. I see a lot of opportunity to work with the chamber of commerce and Downtown Rochelle Association.”
Fiegenschuh conducted his undergraduate studies at Wayne State College focusing on Political Science and obtained his Masters in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska – Omaha. He has attended the Senior Executive Institute through the University of Virginia and is a Credentialed City Manager with the International City Manager’s Association.

Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson commended the city staff at Monday evening’s special meeting, thanking everyone involved in the hiring process. He also said the special committee assigned had the task of perusing the 29 applications filed for the position of city manager.
“Day to day, they all have to be commended for all of their hard work. It was seamless in the transition,” said Olson.
Sue Messer, Interim City Manager since April 6, said she is looking forward to working with Fiegenschuh and has enjoyed the opportunity to serve as interim city manager.
“It’s been a great experience in working with the council closer,” Messer said. “I’m excited about it, I’m looking forward to him getting started. I think he’s going to hit the ground running. He’s got a lot of energy, and I think we will have new opportunities with him. He will bring a lot to us.”
“We’re thrilled to welcome Jeff to Rochelle next month. His energy and excitement will be an excellent addition to our staff,” said Olson.
Spending time outdoors including hiking and kayaking are among Fiegenschuh’s hobbies. He enjoys travel and physical fitness and is an avid sports fan. He has three children, Courtney, Abigail and Carter.
