Fresh-soph Hubs take seventh, varsity Lady Hubs finish eighth

STERLING — Inclement weather threatened to halt the Sterling Invitational at Hoover Park this past Saturday, but the Rochelle cross country teams managed to beat the rain and escape with a pair of impressive team performances.

The Hubs fresh-soph group placed seventh out of 13 schools, with sophomores Santi Cordoba and Uzziel Zarate each medaling for their individual achievements. Cordoba finished 24th out of 99 runners with a time of 18:09.6, while Zarate landed in 28th place with a time of 18:15.8.

Sophomore Tucker Louis recorded Rochelle’s third top-40 finish in the 3-mile fresh-soph race, placing 38th in 18:51.7. Sophomores Diego Escobar (55th in 19:48.4), Ben Hickey (60th in 20:02.0) and Isaac Ochoa (95th in 24:01.9) rounded out the Hubs cross country team on Saturday.

The Lady Hubs varsity cross country team placed eighth out of 22 schools behind junior Katherine Bakken, who medaled in eighth out of 152 girls with a time of 19:19.1. Senior Morgan Baker finished 39th (20:29.1), while seniors Hannah Cruz and Claire Plapp took 54th and 57th with respective times of 21:01.8 and 21:07.9.

Junior Anne Hickey clocked in at 21:33.4 to finish 73rd, with sophomore Britney Baez placing 86th in 22:10.9. Both Rochelle teams will unite for the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m.
