SPRINGFIELD— Jean Henning of Rochelle has been elected commander of AMVETS Department of Illinois. Henning is an Army veteran and an Illinois native. She is the third woman to be elected commander of the Illinois AMVETS.

“To be elected to this position is something I never dreamed would become possible,” Henning said. “To quote the movie Alice in Wonderland, ‘Gentlemen, the only way to achieve the impossible, is to believe it's possible.’”

Henning has been a part of the AMVETS organization since 1999. She is a life member of Post 922 out of Rockford. She previously served two terms as first vice commander from 2019-2021, as well as second vice commander for the department and District 2 as an officer. At Post 922, she has served as the adjutant and commander.

In addition to her service, Henning was the daughter and granddaughter of veterans. Her husband is a Desert Storm veteran. Service to her country runs in the family.

This coming year, Henning will be traveling throughout the state encouraging veterans to join AMVETS and further the mission of veterans helping veterans.
