CHICAGO — Dr. Timothy N. Koritz was re-elected to a second one-year term as chairman of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees during the board’s annual organizational meeting Thursday at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Koritz, of Rochelle, has served as a trustee since 2009 and is a staff anesthesiologist at OSF St. James Hospital in Pontiac. He was a staff anesthesiologist at Rockford Memorial Hospital from 1994 to 2017, and served as a clinical assistant professor at the U of I College of Medicine at Rockford from 1994 until his appointment to the board.
He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a medical degree from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. from University of Cambridge, England.

The board governs the U of I System and its universities in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield, with more than 83,000 students, nearly 25,000 faculty and staff, and a $6.5 billion annual budget.
“It is an honor to pay forward the life-changing opportunities that the University of Illinois has provided for me and my family, and to help build on the rich legacy of excellence in teaching and research that has made the U of I System a key engine of progress for our state,” Koritz said.
Trustees also re-elected a three-member Executive Committee, which meets as needed to complete urgent U of I System business that cannot be postponed to a regular meeting. Members of the committee are Koritz, James Montgomery of Chicago, and Ramon Cepeda of Darien. All will serve one-year terms.
Trustees also re-elected Thomas R. Bearrows as university legal counsel, Dedra “Dee Dee” Williams as secretary of the Board of Trustees and the University, and Avijit Ghosh as comptroller. All will serve one-year terms.
Along with Koritz, Montgomery and Cepeda, other U of I trustees are Donald Edwards of Chicago, Patrick Fitzgerald of Chicago, Dr. Stuart King of Champaign, Edward McMillan of Greenville, and Jill Smart of Downers Grove. Student trustees are Trayshawn Mitchell from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Karina Reyes from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Edwin Robles from the University of Illinois at Springfield.
