ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Township High School marching band has departed for Washington D.C.

Band director Ron Duval and his students packed their instruments and their suitcases Thursday evening before heading out of town around 7 p.m. for the nation’s capital. The band received a send-off courtesy of the Rochelle Police Department as parents gave their final farewells and wished their students the best.

The RTHS band will be performing at two different Veterans Day parades this weekend including the Parade of Heroes, an event honoring the 75th Anniversary of World War II. The parade will travel to the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, Nov. 10. The band’s second performance will take place at the Iwo Jima Memorial on Sunday, Nov. 11.

The RTHS band will march as the only school representing the state of Illinois during this weekend’s Veterans Day events. There will be a total of nine high school bands, three middle school bands and four choirs performing. Rochelle’s group will be composed of 116 people including 96 band members.

The RTHS band will return home on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The group will stop at several sites on their trip including the Washington Monument, the National History Museum and the U.S. Capitol Building. Around $94,000 was raised over the last several months in preparation for the Veterans Day trip.
