ROCHELLE — Rochelle Township High School sophomore Linda McAnly could hardly believe it when she heard her name called as the winner.
The prize was a 2003 Chevy Cavalier donated by Sawicki Motors.
“I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t believe I won,” McAnly beamed. “I had to think about it for a minute.”
Dan Sawicki presented McAnly her bright red car following the assembly. Sawicki said a former teacher inquired about an attendance incentive, which led to the first car being donated. Sawicki has been donating a car to RTHS students for 25 years.
“It’s something we like to do, to give back to the community,” Sawicki said.
The car and several other prizes were given to students at the 25th annual Renaissance Assembly that recognizes students for their perfect attendance throughout the year.
Restaurant gift cards, fitness memberships, pizza party, season ticket for Hub athletic events, movie tickets, and a class ring were just some of the items the students won.
During the 2016-17 school year 73 percent of all RTHS students had at least one quarter of perfect attendance. The freshman had the highest percentage of students with three quarters of perfect attendance.
Entertainment
As part of the tradition at the end of the year assembly, several fun acts were incorporated including the faculty family feud game and the 3-point basketball contest.
Josh Bunger and Kellie Parker, representing the student council presented the Extra Effort Award to Eva Lenkaitis.
Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson presented a plaque proclaiming May 19, 2017 as Vocal Jazz Day. In the proclamation read at a recent Rochelle City Council meeting, Mayor Olson encouraged residents to “recognize, honor, and celebrate the achievements of Midnight Voices. The RTHS vocal jazz group was recently named Small Vocal Jazz Group in the high school category and awarded Outstanding Performance as a blues/pop/rock group by “Downbeat Magazine,” the premier international jazz publication.
Several RTHS teachers were also presented with perfect attendance awards.
