ROCHELLE — Knox College felt like home to Rochelle senior Britney Salinas, and after visiting the campus and meeting with members of the Prairie Fire softball program, the Lady Hub outfielder will continue both her academic and her athletic careers at Knox College after graduating high school.
“I’m really excited about it,” Salinas said. “I was able to meet the coach and the players when I was there and it really seemed like a family environment. I had been thinking about continuing my athletics and I’m really glad I decided to because I feel like this will be a really good opportunity for me.”
Salinas will join the Prairie Fire after establishing herself as one of Rochelle’s premier two-way players on the softball diamond. The senior outfielder earned Northern Illinois Big 12 All-Conference First Team honors last season, and she could repeat her feat with another solid season this spring.
“Knox really stuck out to me,” Salinas said. “I won’t have to finish playing the sport I love and it will be really nice to get an education and continue playing a sport I’m passionate about. I really liked the buildings and the communities around the school. Their library really stuck out to me as well, and getting the personal experience of meeting their coaches really helped push the decision.”
While she is unsure of her major, Salinas said she would like to pursue biology or medicine at Knox College. Salinas also said that her experience in both academics and athletics at Rochelle Township High School have helped prepare her for when she takes both her education and her softball abilities to the next level in the future.
“It’s really a family environment here which is wonderful,” Salinas said. “We like to have fun so it’s not all about pressure and that really helped me continue to love the sport and further my desire to keep going with it.”
