ROCHELLE — Dr. Marcia Schnorr, Parish Nurse at St. Paul Lutheran Church and Chairperson for Lutheran Parish Nurses International, escorted the 2017 Study Tour for Lutheran Parish Nurses International, NFP Aug. 1 through 8 to London and Cambridge, England.
The group had participants from Australia, England, Germany, Norfolk Island, the United States and Wales. While in London, the group toured the Florence Nightingale Museum and heard a presentation highlighting Nightingale’s call from God to become a nurse caring for body, mind, and soul.
Although parish nursing did not exist in the days of Nightingale, her sense of vocation and spiritual care was not unlike that of parish nurses. Other observational experiences in London were in Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
In Cambridge, the group spent two days at Westfield House and Resurrection Lutheran Church. Westfield House is the center for theological studies specific to the Lutheran Church and is part of the educational collaboration of Cambridge University. Resurrection Lutheran Church is the headquarters for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in England.
While in Cambridge, the group had lectures on the history Lutheranism in England, an overview of parish nursing in the United Kingdom, and sharing about parish nursing in the various participating Lutheran parish nurses. At present, there are no Lutheran parish nurses in England, Dr. Schnorr will remain in contact with the participating nurse from England and Wales as they consider ways to initiate parish nursing in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in England.
