Communities rallying around one of their own

CRESTON — Small towns are known for their willingness to help those in need. Members in the Creston and Rochelle communities are rallying around Roland “Gordie” Terry as he battles kidney disease, responding with a benefit to be held in his honor later this month.

The benefit is scheduled for Sat., Apr. 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Creston Fire Department. All of the proceeds will go to Terry to help support his fight against Polycystic Kidney Disease.

Chili and dessert will be served, along with hot dogs for the non-chili eating guests. Prices are $8 for adults and $4 for kids. Those 4 and under eat for free.

The benefit, sponsored by the Creston Booster Club and the Ogle-Lee Fire Station in Creston, includes a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. Silent auction items include a home movie gift basket with popcorn and DVDs, Longaberger gift basket and more.

Terry had been a long-time employee of the Blue Beacon truck wash before his illness has left him unable to work with nearly eight-hour daily dialysis treatments.

Family members said Terry will need a kidney transplant.

“We are all just trying to help him as much as we can because he’s always just been a hard worker,” said Terry’s sister, Janie Rynko. “He hardly ever missed a day of work trying to support his family.”

Anyone wishing to purchase raffle tickets or to make a donation is asked to call Creston Booster Club chairman Dave Brown at 815-757-5360 or Janie Rynko at 815-762-5325. Raffle tickets also will be sold at the benefit. Donations can be made at the benefit or by calling Brown or Rynko.
