Society's annual banquet April 28

OREGON — The Prairie Preservation Society of Ogle County’s annual banquet will be held at the Lorado Taft Field Campus, 1414 N. River Rd., Oregon, on Sunday, April 28.
A social hour with book and native plant sales and silent auction from 5-6 p.m. will be followed by a delicious meal (either turkey with the works or vegetarian Moroccan stew) at 6 p.m. and a program at 7 p.m.
The program this year will focus on Prairie Chickens by Peggy Farrell, Environmental Educator and Outreach Specialist at The University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. She will present photos, facts, stories and videos to tell the status of the protected bird. The spring mating ritual in which the male bird stomps his feet, raises his “ear feathers,” jumps, cackles and whines. He inflates the bright orange air sacs on the side of his head and calls a low and resonant whoo doo zhoo.
The annual spring mating ritual of the male prairie chicken, known as “booming,” is an equal treat for the eye and ear.
Tickets are $25 for adults; $12.50 for children. Advance registration is essential. To purchase or for more information, phone 815-973-4926 or email lin.vogl@gmail.com.
