ROCHELLE — The Rochelle varsity softball team will need another chance to attempt their its first conference victory of the season after suffering a tough loss against LaSalle-Peru at home on Thursday.
Freshman Jordin Dickey singled twice, and junior Maggie Williams walked three times to lead the Rochelle offense. But the Lady Hubs conceded too many runs on errors and fielder’s choice opportunities, allowing nine runs in the fourth inning and falling to the Cavaliers 19-2. Rochelle dropped to 3-16 overall and 0-4 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 West.
LaSalle-Peru plated three runners in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Hannah Luxton and Williams each walked in the bottom of the first inning, but the Lady Hubs were unable to capitalize. After sophomore Bella Lodico tossed a scoreless second inning, Rochelle loaded the bases with no outs on senior Maddi O’Rorke’s walk and singles by Dickey and senior Emilee Dueringer.
The Cavaliers escaped unscathed after forcing two outs at home plate and a popout to the shortstop. LaSalle-Peru did serious damage in the third inning, taking advantage of multiple Rochelle errors to score seven runs and jump ahead 10-0. Dueringer broke the shutout after reaching on an error to plate Williams in the bottom of the third inning.
LaSalle-Peru’s nine-run outburst in the fourth inning put the game out of reach for the Lady Hubs. Rochelle totaled one run in the bottom of the fourth after freshman Hayleigh Jones singled up the middle and scored on an RBI single by junior Abby Reish.
