Softball: Lady Hubs avoid shutout in season finale

Pointer records RBI as Kaneland cruises over Rochelle 16-1
ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team hosted Kaneland for its final Interstate 8 Conference game of the regular season on Thursday. Senior Maleah Pointer’s RBI groundout scored junior Adamaris Betancourt to help the Lady Hubs avoid a shutout in their 16-1 loss against the Knights.
Kaneland surged ahead in the top of the first inning, scoring seven runs on six singles as well as one walk and three defensive errors from the Lady Hubs. The Knights extended their lead in the top of the second inning, where they added five runs on four hits including a solo home run from Breanne Crosby.
Isabelle Stombres singled and scored on an error to give Kaneland a 13-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Pointer’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning scored the lone run of the game for the Lady Hubs, who conceded three runs on three hits including a three-run homer by Crosby in the top of the fourth inning.
Rochelle (5-20, 2-12 Interstate 8) finished with zero hits in the loss. Sophomore Lauren Dyer threw all four innings for the Lady Hubs, striking out two Kaneland batters.
