Softball: Lady Hubs battle in road loss at Ottawa

Four-run frame fuels Pirate rally as Rochelle falls 7-1

OTTAWA — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team hung tough during Wednesday’s Interstate 8 Conference road game against Ottawa. Holding a 1-0 lead through the first three-and-one-half innings, Rochelle battled but was unable to hold off the Pirates, who scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to help seal a 7-1 win over the Lady Hubs.

Rochelle (4-11, 3-9 Interstate 8) scored its lone run in the top of the first inning, where junior Morgan Smardo led off with a single and came around on senior Jordin Dickey’s RBI double to left-center field. Juniors Addie Friestad and Layla Pelan each singled for the Lady Hubs in the top of the second inning, but the Pirates successfully stranded both runners on base.

Rochelle loaded the bases in the top of the third inning, with Smardo drawing a walk before freshman Lauren Dyer slapped a one-out single and Dickey reached on a hit-by-pitch. But a strikeout and a groundout in consecutive at-bats ended the Lady Hub scoring threat. Brynne Sember and Makenna Chiaventone fueled Ottawa’s four-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning, with both players smacking two-run singles to give the Pirates a 4-1 advantage.

RBIs from Maura Condon and Sember in the bottom of the fifth inning extended Ottawa’s lead to 6-1. The Pirates added their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning, where McKenzie Osianzi brought home Ryleigh Stehl on an RBI single. Rochelle went hitless over the final four innings.
