SANDWICH — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity softball team won its third straight game on Tuesday, defeating Sandwich 8-4 on the road for its first Interstate 8 Conference victory of the season. Sophomore Morgan Smardo led Rochelle at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two extra-base hits and two RBIs. Freshman Ella Alfano went 2-for-4 with two singles and two RBIs.
“I’ve been looking for outside pitches that I can drive,” Smardo said. “If the pitch isn’t outside, I’ll take it and I’ll go from there. It felt good to get our first conference win. We played good defense, Bella pitched really well and we had good at-bats. We want to keep working on our defense and getting our bats going earlier in the game so we can score in the first inning.”
Senior Bella Lodico earned the win on the pitcher’s mound, striking out eight batters and allowing only three hits. Senior Sawyer McGee went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Rochelle will host Sycamore on Wednesday before facing Plano at home on Friday.
“We hit the ball well in the first inning and I was really confident in our defense behind me,” Lodico said. “They had a hard time adjusting to my changeup, so I continued to throw it throughout the game. I was impressed with our at-bats and we were able to get ahead early.”
