FREEPORT — The Rochelle varsity softball team traveled to Freeport this past Saturday for a nonconference doubleheader against the Pretzels. The Lady Hubs dropped the opener 15-0 before falling 14-8 in the finale to go 0-2 on the day and move to 0-3 on the season. Rochelle will host Rockford Boylan on Wednesday.
“We’ve talked about making the right plays defensively,” head coach Lindsay Suess said. “Some of the girls are playing in different spots than they’re used to, and we’ve talked about making plays and not throwing the ball around the field.”
The Lady Hubs struggled to get their offense going in the first game against Freeport, as the Pretzels no-hit Rochelle to win by mercy rule. The Lady Hubs drew two walks in the loss courtesy of freshman Jordin Dickey and sophomore Bella Lodico, who took the mound for Rochelle.
“We talked a lot about pitch selection after the game and making sure we’re swinging at good pitches,” Suess said. “We need to make sure we’re swinging at strikes. They were throwing a lot of rise balls, and we need to make sure we’re letting those balls stay up. We wanted to go into the next game making sure we did the little things better.”
Rochelle brought the bats in the second game, as three players including seniors Emilee Dueringer, Maddi O’Rorke and junior Hannah Luxton totaled two RBIs in the loss. Luxton recorded two hits and one walk, with O’Rorke doubling and Dueringer totaling one hit. Lodico added one walk and one RBIs for the Lady Hubs, while junior Ally Reish did the pitching.
“They threw a different pitcher at us which made a difference, but our girls came out swinging and we put runs on the board right away,” Suess said. “I think we made better pitch selections, and when they put their No. 1 pitcher back in, we avoided the pitches that we were missing on during the first game.”
