GENESEO — The Hubs sophomore baseball team split the first two games of their series with the Geneseo Maple Leafs, falling by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday after winning on Monday by a score of 5-3.
The two games move the sophomore team’s record to 8-5-1 on the season, and the boys will play Geneseo a third time on Thursday to decide the series.
Monday
Louie Mancinas notched a team-high two RBIs in Rochelle’s first victory of the series, with Mason DeLille and Cody Johnson each driving in one run. The Hubs took a 3-0 lead after two innings before scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings.
Hayden Jones and Brady Shank pitched for Rochelle, striking out seven combined batters with five of those coming from Jones, who threw the first three innings of the game. Shank tossed the final four innings, holding the Maple Leafs to just one run despite walking five batters.
Tuesday
Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the seventh, Rochelle scored two runs to jump ahead, but Geneseo responded with two runs of its own to win the game in the final frame. Noah Knight and Anthony Hueramo recorded the Hubs’ two RBIs.
Brandon Johnson nearly tossed a complete game on Tuesday, throwing six and two-thirds innings and striking out 10 batters while walking just one.
