ROCHELLE — On Saturday, local volunteers and members of the Red Cross came together to install 229 free smoke alarms for Rochelle families vulnerable to home fires during a Sound the Alarm event.

The event was part of a national Red Cross initiative to install 50,000 free smoke alarms in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country in May.

Volunteers from the Rochelle Fire Department, Ogle-Lee Fire Protection District, the City of Rochelle and the rest of the community met at The REC Center before breaking into teams to cover the entirety of Rochelle. Home fire safety information was provided to residents as well.
