ROCHELLE – Due to issues including lack of participation in previous years, budget and space, the Flagg Rochelle Community Park District will not be offering its usual lineup of day camps this summer.
“Due to budget issues and not having the space we are not offering our all-day camps this summer,” said TC Hager, Flagg-Rochelle recreation supervisor.
Park district staff knows the day camps are popular with some families, but according to Hager, discontinuing the camps is only temporary. Once the community center opens up, the district is hoping to be able to offer the programs once again, all in one location at a lower cost.
“People are disappointed we aren’t offering them,” said Hager. “We are hoping that we can bring them back as soon as possible.”
When the summer programs were being offered, they were aimed towards younger kids between the ages of 6 and 12. The programs were available for a whole day, or just portions of the day.
“Parents could sign up for only the morning, only the afternoon or all day, said Hager. “But most of the families would drop their kids off at 8 a.m. and pick them up at 5 p.m.
The park district may not be offering their full set of day camps, but “Sports of All Sorts” events are set to take place this June and July, from 12:15-2:15 at Lincoln School. The first session of events will take place on June 11, 13, 18 and 20, and the second session will take place on July 16, 18, 23 and 25.
“The event will be two hours long, starting at Lincoln School and ending at the pool,” said Hager. “It introduces kids to all different kinds of sports, and maybe they will pick one up they haven’t played before.”
Parents can register their children for “Sports of All Sorts” visit the Flagg Rochelle Park District website or by calling 815-562-7813 or stopping in at the district office, located at 735 N. 2nd St.
