Steward Girl Scouts given Outstanding Citizens Award

Posted

STEWARD — “An Evening in the Park” event was held on Friday, Aug. 10 in Steward with attendees enjoying a pulled pork supper, bake sale, bluegrass band and movie.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2018 Outstanding Citizen Award, and this year it was a group effort.
This year’s recipient was Steward Girl Scout Troop 1870. As Daisy Scouts, the girls planted bulbs last fall and annuals this past spring, beautifying Kissing Rock Garden which is located by the historic depot.
Their work actually began in Spring 2017 when they were looking for a Daisy Scout project. They decided on a flower planting.

Winners
Village President Hugh McKiski introduced this year’s Outstanding Citizens. Troop 1870 consists of Morgan DeLille, Amalia (Molly) Kedzie, Eviana (Evi) O’Rorke-Silva, Barbara Palmer, Jamie Riddell and Mayson Smardo.  They were presented with a brick that will be installed at Celebration Garden on Main Street.
Village trustee Les Bonnell presented the troop with a gift certificate from the community.
Troop leaders
Troop 1870 leaders include Nicole Kedzie, Lisa Palmer and Amy Riddell. The troop formed in March of 2016.
Other community service activities they have done are holding a food drive and working at Rochelle Christian Food Pantry and donating numerous books to the Steward School library.
The girls are now second and third grade students at Steward Elementary School.  They are off to a great start in becoming leaders of tomorrow.
Steward Outstanding Citizens include Matthew Moore (2015), Zachery Burkhart (2016) and Alayna Smardo (2017).
