Supporting Pegasus Special Riders

ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Masonic Lodge and the Rochelle Moose Lodge are among several local organizations that support charities, with both just recently donating to Pegasus Special Riders, Inc.

The Oregon equine-assisted therapeutic riding center sees children and adults with special needs ranging from physically, mentally, and/or emotionally challenged individuals from Ogle and surrounding counties.

Every October the Masons of Rochelle hold a Whole Hog Pig Roast to benefit the area charities including the Academic Bowl, college scholarships, and Masonic youth groups. Masonic Lodge treasurer Ken Stoll, along with secretary Bud Norcross presented Darah Bridgeman, Pegasus Administrator with the donation last week.

“Three of the cardinal tenets of Masons are Faith, Hope, and Charity. Toward that end, the Masons formed the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, which provides free medical needs for kids,” said Norcross, Rochelle Masonic Lodge secretary. “The Rochelle Masonic Lodge is proud to continue that tradition by donating to Pegasus Special Riders who also donate so much of their time to assisting those children with special needs.”

Marisol Luxton, Senior Regent, along with Rochelle Moose Lodge Governor Don Schultz also presented Bridgeman with a donation to help assist the therapeutic riding center.

Dave Schabacker with the Moose explained the international organization shifted their charitable contributions to a local level.

“Since 2009 Moose International has been a primary sponsor of Special Olympics Softball. Each lodge and chapter was asked to donate $100 a year for this effort,” said Schabacker. “This year in order to increase recognition of what lodges and chapters do for their communities, Moose International has stopped its sponsorship of Special Olympics to allow Moose Family Centers to get involved locally.”

Pegasus Special Riders, Inc. has been operating since 1997 and depends on a team of volunteers that perform all of the required duties such as working with the riders, caring for the horses and facilities, raising funds, and providing the necessary administrative support.
