ROCHELLE — Rochelle Township High School hosted the 2019 Rochelle Summer Tennis Tournament this past Saturday, with several local players bringing home top finishes along the way. 43 players across 13 divisions participated in this year’s tournament.
John Prabhakar and Roy Threlkeld won the Senior Men’s Doubles Championship with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Jed Dunbar and Roger Duncan, who placed second. Jana McCracken and Dave Schiltz won the Senior Mixed Doubles Championship, going 2-0 with a 6-4 win against Roger Duncan and Mary K. Merema, who placed second, and a 6-0 win over Jed and Jan Dunbar.
Kevin Zheng and Jason Zheng won the Adult Men’s Doubles Championship with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Andy Eckardt and Steve Merema, who placed second. John Michael Loggins won the Adult Men’s Singles Championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kevin Zheng, who placed second. Kristy Eckardt and Lizzie Cartwright won the Adult Women’s Doubles Championship, going 2-0 with a 6-0 victory against Jan Dunbar and Jessica Albers, who placed second, and a 6-0 victory over Jill Kohlert and Cindy Bonnell.
Andy and Kristy Eckardt won the Adult Mixed Doubles Championship, going 4-0 over four matches. Andy and Kristy topped Mike and Joan Koolidge 6-0 before beating Jim and Jill Kohlert 6-2 and winning 6-4 over John Michael Loggins and Jessica Albers, who placed second with a 3-1 record. Andy and Kristy won 6-0 over Bob Orta and Cindy Bonnell.
Maddie Devert and Emma Zelenik won the High School Girls Doubles Championship, going 3-0 over three matches. Devert and Zelenik defeated Caitlin McMurray and Melanie Gonzalez 6-0 before winning 6-1 over Sawyer McGee and MeLisa Young and earning a 6-4 victory over Amethyst Ernat and Lauren Klein, who placed second with a 2-1 record.
Carlie Miller won the High School Girls Singles Championship, outlasting Olivia Ernat 8-7 (7-4), who placed second, before winning 8-0 against Caitlin McMurray. Brecken Peterson won the High School Boys Singles Championship, beating Jason Zheng 8-1 and topping Marvel Zhang, who placed second, 8-1.
Brecken Peterson and Cosette Cannell won the High School Mixed Doubles Championship, going 2-0 overall with an 8-2 win over Madelyn Verdick and Marvel Zhang, who placed second, and an 8-5 victory against Caitlin McMurray and Jason Zheng. Grace Ferguson and Addison Arjes won the 6-8 Girls Doubles Championship, defeating Elin Zheng and Sarah Eckardt, who placed second, 6-2, 6-2.
Cosette Cannell won the 6-8 Girls Singles Championship, going 2-0 with an 8-0 win over Sarah Eckardt and an 8-1 victory against Elin Zheng, who placed second. Kristy Eckardt won the Adult Women's Singles Championship, going 3-0 with 6-0 wins against Julia Frye, Laura Evangelista and a 6-3 victory against Jessica Albers, who placed second.
