Thankful for senior center activities

Posted

Dear Editor,
On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Hub City Senior Center and the Flagg-Rochelle Public Library hosted its annual Oktoberfest at the senior center, located at 401 Cherry Ave., Rochelle.
Those in attendance were treated to a meal of bratwurst, sauerkraut, baked beans, German potato salad, German chocolate cupcakes and pretzels.
Following dinner, the Mike Schneider Polka Band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin performed for approximately three hours.

At one point, head librarian Sarah Flanagan — caught up in the spirit of the occasion — led several dancers in a rousing version of “The Chicken Dance,” one of many highlights of the evening.
Everyone who was there seemed to enjoy the event, which is one of several special activities that senior director Connie Dougherty and her staff hold throughout the year at the senior center.
Each Oktoberfest celebration is usually well attended and a great way for local seniors - and the community - to come together for a little entertainment and fellowship.
Wouldn’t it be a real shame if someday it was decided to move the center to a new location, especially if it was inconvenient for senior center patrons who have trouble getting around, and they might have to miss out on such things?
Respectfully,
Doug Oleson
