SCHAUMBURG — Rochelle youth golfer Ailani Thiravong is the youngest member of the Metro Rockford All-Stars, but that didn’t prevent the 9-year-old from helping her team bring home a top finish in the local PGA Junior League Postseason opener at Schaumburg Golf Club this past weekend.

Teams from Village Lakes, McHenry, Woodfield, Fox Valley, Pine Meadow, North Glen, PrairieView, Randall Oaks, Chicago Park District and Eastern Lake County competed this past weekend. Metro Rockford was one of only two teams to advance to the Sectional Championship at Mundelein’s Pine Meadow Golf Club this Saturday.

Thiravong and Metro Rockford will face three other teams in Illinois at the Sectional Championship. The youth golfers will advance to the Regional Championship at Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Michigan with two head-to-head match victories in the Sectional Championship. Regionals will be played Sept. 15-16.

Winners of the 12 Regional Championship tournaments qualify for the PGA Junior League Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona from Nov. 16-19. The PGA Junior League is for youth players ranging from 8 to 13 years old.

“This is the farthest the Metro Rockford team has advanced,” head coach Lloyd McWilliams said.
