unBEATable workout

ROCHELLE –– Students in the Summer HUB Project are working out to the beat of their own drum this summer.

The Fit Hub is getting students excited and moving with cardio drumming as upbeat music plays in the background. Cardio drumming involves drumming with drumsticks on an exercise ball held in place with a bucket. The students were all smiles, their heads barely visible above the exercise ball, as they beat along to the music following instructions from Becky Schact, Fit Hub owner.

Schact is volunteering to lead the exercise class for the HUB Project as a way to give back to the community. Cardio drumming is also offered at The Fit Hub three days a week free of charge.

“Cardio drumming gets you moving in a different way and can be done at any level,” explained Schact.

During a class offered at The Fit Hub one attendee bangs on the exercise ball while sitting in her wheel chair.

While the students were hesitant when Schact first introduced them to cardio drumming, after a few simple lessons they now enjoy the musical workout. Between banging on the exercise ball, squatting down to drum on the bucket and running around the “drums” the students are constantly moving and working the full body.

Schact explained she modifies the workout to make cardio drumming fun for the students while they keep moving and drumming.
