DEKALB — The closing reception for the NIU High School Art Invitational was Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Jack Olsen Gallery in DeKalb.
The annual high school art competition included more than 200 artworks of all media from approximately 20 northern Illinois high schools of varying populations.
Alva Valle took home the top prize, first place, for her color pencil drawing on cardboard titled “Claire.” She is a senior at Rochelle Township High School and an AP Studio Art student.
As a junior, she won Honorable Mention in the Congressional Art Competition and the Women’s League Summer Arts Scholarship. This win was a great way to start her senior year and hopefully the beginning of an awesome art competition year.
Other competitors included Lisette Milan’s pencil drawing, Damesis Carrillo-Valdez’s ink drawing, and Andre Gonzalez’s digital photo transfer. All four works can be seen in the display case outside the nurse’s office at RTHS.
