ROCHELLE — Students and staff at Lincoln School welcomed area veterans Friday with a special luncheon.
The hallways and cafeteria were transformed with pictures and artwork to honor the special guests. During their lunch, the students took the opportunity to ask questions and talk to the guests of honor. They also gave each of the veterans a handwritten card or letter thanking them for their service to the country.
“We always have the kids invite a veteran and staff helps bring in food and treats,” said Michelle Gittleson, school nurse and event organizer. “The kids get a picture of their veteran and we laminate them and add to our collection. Some of the artwork and pictures are from almost 30 years ago.”
Gittleson said one of the veterans in recent years had recognized their artwork they did as a student at Lincoln School.
“It really is something special,” said Debbie Da Costa, Lincoln School teacher. “Mrs. Gittleson creates goodie bags for our visitors too. Her pride in our country is infectious and it leads to many teachable moments for our school.”
