VIEWPOINT: Watch out for dive-bombing birds

I was assaulted from behind this week. I have lived in Rochelle a long time, but this is the first time I have been physically assaulted. And it happened in broad daylight.
I was on the north side of the road leading into Squires Landing. I had stopped to take a picture of the huge ponds following Wednesday morning’s deluge.
Suddenly, I was struck from behind, with a fairly good force. I turned around and the assailant came right at me again. I put my hood up and waved my arms, which seemed to frighten it away.
I tell you, those red wing blackbirds can be pretty protective of their territory and nests. They have dive bombed me in the past, but this one smacked me in the back of my head. Then it sat in a tree and screamed at me before making a third run at me.
I took the hint and got back into my car, leaving mother or dad to defend its territory.
The last day of school for Rochelle kids is Monday, which means there will be youngsters riding bikes and skateboards all over town. Drive carefully and remember, they sometimes do the unexpected.
Thursday morning’s rain was quite a drencher. A friend said we got over two inches and it seemed to come all at once.
I understand storm sirens went off in town, which had to cause a few hearts to race. Lots of lightning, strong winds, and a driving rain made for a shortage of sleep.
It seems to me that not only have we gotten a record amount of rain this spring, but the storms seem more intense.
The effects of the weather could be felt for months. Will farmers be able to get corn and soybeans in? Will some have to replant because seeds have rotted before sprouting? State reports indicate Illinois farmers are way behind in getting crops in the ground. Hopefully, the weather gets drier and farmers can do their job.
I’m going to be highly controversial now.
I think the Beatles are the best band ever. Their music has been listened to and enjoyed for over 50 years. No other band comes close.
If you ask me what my favorite Beatles tune is, I would be hard pressed to answer because there are so many good ones.
Yes, the Rolling Stones have staying power. Mick and the group are touring this summer. I still like their music, but the Beatles are the best.
