ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Township High School volleyball program will have a lot of new faces this coming season, and many of the girls received an opportunity to showcase their talents during the RTHS high school summer camp this past week (June 24-27).
The varsity Lady Hubs tip off their annual Summer League in Sterling this coming week, while the junior varsity girls are playing summer volleyball at Sycamore. Second-year head coach Molly Sly is eager to work with Rochelle’s up-and-coming players.
“Our incoming freshmen are extremely skilled and I’m really excited to see what they do at the freshman and sophomore levels,” Sly said. “Once they get up to the varsity level, they’ll be really fun to watch. We introduce our serve-receives, our defense and we go over who gets second balls and other types of quick sets. We want to run a fast offense, so we install those sorts of things over the summer.”
The high school summer camp ran from 11:45 to 1:15 p.m. in the RTHS main gymnasium this past week, with all players reviewing fundamental volleyball skills and team concepts. All campers received T-shirts at the conclusion of the camp, which featured live scrimmage matches pitting girls of all ages against each other.
“Any time the girls are out playing volleyball, they can knock off some of the rust and they get a little better,” Sly said. “If they’re coming to the camp and our open gyms, and if they’re coming to league matches, they’re going to be a step above players who didn’t come to camp, open gyms or matches. It’s fun seeing the girls grow over the summer, and it’s even more fun seeing them put everything together during the season.”
