LASALLE — The Rochelle varsity volleyball team shocked LaSalle-Peru with an intense three-game victory during the first Northern Illinois Big 12 West matchup between the two squads this season. Unfortunately, the Lady Hubs were unable to earn another win over the Cavaliers on Tuesday.

Despite a strong defensive effort which included 40 digs and three blocks, the Lady Hubs were struck down by LaSalle-Peru on its home court, falling 11-25, 16-25 to drop to 14-18-1 overall and 3-3 in NIB-12 West play. Senior Sarah Craven led the Lady Hubs with 14 digs while sophomore Clare Green added eight digs and senior Emma Mehrings totaled six digs plus a team-high 10 kills.

“Our serve-receive was extremely good so I was excited to see that,” head coach Molly Sly said. “We were missing Grace [Orlikowski] in the back row and that made a big difference in our passes during volleys. LaSalle-Peru did a good job of getting touches on almost all of our hits.”

Juniors Katie Van Hise and Maggie Duval combined for seven kills while Green led Rochelle with 14 assists. Van Hise totaled two blocks and senior Abby Tilton added one for the Lady Hubs, who will play at Sterling on Thursday. Seniors Kelsey Thompson and Emily Engelkes each recorded four digs in the loss.

“The girls have really taken it upon themselves to read the hitter’s shoulders and put themselves in a position where they can get the digs,” Sly said. “They read where the block is or isn’t and the girls move well to get the ball up… Hopefully when regionals come around, the girls can get that fire to win back.”

The Rochelle sophomore volleyball team finished 0-4 at the Rochelle Invitational on Saturday before falling 17-25, 19-25 at LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday to move to 8-18 overall. Freshman Sylvia Hasz led the Lady Hubs with 25 kills, six aces and three blocks in the tournament while Afi Gati added six kills and seven blocks. Freshman Allie Tyrrell-Martin recorded seven kills and three blocks, and Ellie Kinn totaled six kills, three aces and two blocks.

Hasz recorded 14 kills and two aces at LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday, while Morgan Haas had three aces. Jesenia Solano and Alexis Sanford each had one kill.

The Rochelle freshman volleyball team is now 4-13 overall after losses against Kaneland, Morris, Ottawa and LaSalle-Peru. The Lady Hubs fell at home to Kaneland (13-25, 21-25) before losing at Morris (15-25, 14-25) and dropping their home match to Ottawa (8-25, 17-25). Rochelle lost 14-25, 11-25 at LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday.
