Volleyball: Lady Hubs suffer tough loss at Morris

Rochelle drops two games 21-25, 20-25

MORRIS — The Rochelle varsity volleyball team played two close games against the Morris Redskins on the road Tuesday evening, but the Lady Hubs were unable to bring home the victory.

Rochelle fought tooth-and-nail against the Redskins, who squeaked out their win in two games over the Lady Hubs, who scored at least 20 points in both games of their 21-25, 20-25 loss. Sophomore Clare Green led Rochelle with 19 assists, while senior Emma Mehrings recorded a team-high five kills. Juniors Maggie Duval and Katie Van Hise each added four kills, with junior Allison Seebach totaling three kills and one block.

“I thought Allison and Emma played really well in the first game,” head coach Molly Sly said. “Our passing went down in the second game and that’s when we saw [Morris] start coming back and taking control. We weren’t really able to get the momentum and keep it throughout the match.”

Mehrings and senior Sarah Craven led the Rochelle defense with six digs while seniors Emily Engelkes and Grace Orlikowski each recorded three digs. The Lady Hubs totaled 19 kills in the match, but 13 hitting errors made it difficult for the Rochelle offense to find consistent rhythm on Tuesday.

“Our passing unfortunately wasn’t as good as it’s been in past matches,” Sly said. “We weren’t able to get as many good sets and good balls out to our hitters. Our setter was running around a lot to chase those balls, and hopefully we’ll be able to work on that in practice.”

Rochelle will host Ottawa on Thursday for the program’s annual Volley for the Cure match. The Lady Hubs (13-13-1 overall) can get back above the .500 mark on the season with a victory over the Lady Pirates, who lost against Rochelle earlier this year.

The Rochelle sophomore volleyball team dropped to 8-13 overall with a tough three-game loss against Morris (25-18, 21-25, 19-25). Freshman Sylvia Hasz led Rochelle with 11 kills, four aces and one block, while freshman Allie Tyrrell-Martin added three aces and one block. Afi Gati anchored the defense with three blocks.
