ROCHELLE — Two members of the Rochelle varsity volleyball team earned All-Conference recognition by coaches from the Northern Illinois Big 12 West this season. Senior Emma Mehrings received All-Conference First Team honors and sophomore Clare Green was given an All-Conference Honorable Mention.
“I think it’s a really big accomplishment and it’s something I’ve been working for since my freshman year,” Mehrings said. “I feel very honored to have the award and I think I worked very hard for it.”
Mehrings headlined the Rochelle offense this season with a team-high 259 kills while also setting up the team’s defense with 195 digs (second-most on the team). The senior outside hitter was integral in helping the Lady Hubs win 16 matches this season while reaching the regional finals for the first time since 2012 under first-year head coach Molly Sly.
Mehrings also stepped up as a leader for the team’s younger hitters including juniors Emma Smith, Maggie Duval and Gabrielle Harding, who will have some big shoes to fill next year.
“I think I really improved my hitting since I wasn’t really used to hitting a lot as a freshman,” Mehrings said. “I’ve improved on my technique as well as where to place the ball… When we’re behind our hitters in the back row, we always try to tell them where to hit the ball and how to find the open spots on the court. We always try helping each other out during hitting lines as well.”
Green compiled 594 assists as Rochelle’s starting setter this season, and she finished third on the Lady Hubs in digs with 176. Mehrings is one of several seniors, including playmakers Sarah Craven, Emily Engelkes and Grace Orlikowski, who will be graduating from this year’s team.
“I’m going to miss being with my teammates since we had a really strong bond this year,” Mehrings said. “We always had fun in the locker room and during practices and games.”
