STERLING — The Rochelle varsity volleyball team battled in the Sterling Invitational on Saturday, with the Lady Hubs finishing 2-3 over five matches to move their overall record to 13-12-1 on the season. Rochelle will return to action at Morris on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The Lady Hubs faced three teams in pool play, taking down Sterling 2 in two games (25-14, 25-8) before dropping close matches against pool champion Metamora (21-25, 23-25) and Fulton (19-25, 25-16, 11-15). Rochelle finished third in its pool.
“Clare [Green] had a solid all-around day and I think she always comes out and plays well,” head coach Molly Sly said. “Katie [Van Hise] was putting the ball away later on in the day and Emma [Mehrings] played really well. Metamora and Fulton are both very solid teams and we played them close.”
Rochelle opened bracket play with a 25-16, 25-17 victory over Ashton-Franklin Center, which defeated the Lady Hubs earlier this season. Rochelle’s tournament run ended with a 24-26, 21-25 loss against Dixon, which lost against the Lady Hubs earlier this year.
“Our serve-receives were pretty good but we need to work on our blocking and setting up our blocks,” Sly said. “There were a couple times where we were slow and on our heels, but other than that I thought the girls came out and played well. We just faced some good competition.”
