ROCHELLE — Walter “Mike” B. Dyer II, 71, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019 at his home.
Mike was born on June 8, 1948 to Walter B. and Marion (Kingdon) Dyer in Rochelle. On Jan. 3, 1970, he married Carolyn Taylor in Rochelle.
Mike worked for Nestle Distribution for 45 years and the Rochelle Middle School for 25 years.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Mike Steckler and Adolf Schmid-Sommer.
Mike proudly served with the United States Navy from 1966 - 1969. He served in Vietnam with the Seabees receiving a Purple Heart. Watching and going to sporting events for his grandchildren was an all time favorite activity of his. He was a perfectionist and it showed in his landscaping and flower beds, which were more for Carolyn’s enjoyment than his own.
Mike is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn; three sons, Jason (Amy) Dyer of Monroe City, Missouri, Bryan (Crystal) Dyer of Rochelle, and Matt (Corrie) Dyer of Sycamore; brother, Brit (Deb) Dyer of Oregon; four sisters, Judy (Wayne) McCoy of Esmond, Dee Steckler of Bozeman, Montana, Linda Schmid-Sommer of Wheaton, and Jody Jasinski of Tacoma, Washington; and six grandchildren, Hallie, Lauren, Alex, Lucas, Camryn and Katelyn.
The visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept.8 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9 at Trinity Memory Gardens in Rochelle with Chaplain Judy Williams officiating.
