ROCHELLE — What’s the scoop? That’s what a group of Tilton School fifth graders have been asking as reporters for “The Nugget Newspaper.”

The newspaper has current news, cover story, outdoor activities, book reviews, and a comic section.

They call themselves the Chicken Nugget Squad with code names such as Milkshake, Chicken Wing, Waffle, Tomato, KFC, and Taco. The president of the newspaper, Bianca Herrera, explained how the idea came about considering it wasn’t an assigned project.

“We wanted to do something fun for our school. We asked if we could do something, so we made the Nugget,” said Herrera. “We all have our assigned jobs because we all have our own special talents. Jaime did sports because he’s big on activities. Belle, Isaac, and Sienna were in charge of drawing comics, and Ella did books…She is very big on books.”

In unison, the others agreed with Herrera.

“We wanted to do something for the school to enjoy. There’s one for each class, one in the office, and one in the library,” said Belle Hunley.

“We put all of our time together and came up with the first newspaper…we did that all on our own time,” Herrera said.

The students said everyone in the school has enjoyed reading the first edition. A second one is already in the works with a possible third one before the school year is finished. All of them have already thought about approaching the principal at Rochelle Middle School, Tony Doyle, with the idea to continue into next year.
